Really nice article! There is a lot of speculation regarding links and how important they will be as RankBrain becomes more and more advanced through its learning capabilities. Do you think that their importance will diminish in near future?

In reply to <a href="https://smashdigital.com/TWS48/#comment-403">Joseph Hughes</a>.

As far as I can tell, this is pretty closely related to fashion/craft/recipe bloggers that review and link to products they were either given or received some kind of "payment" for, but did not NoFollow the links (or otherwise disclose the nature of the relationship. I think, for the purposes of understanding this manual action, local sites linking to relevant/authority sites should be just fine!

I realize it's mostly speculation at this point, but how egregious do you think a site's outbound linking needs to be to incur the wrath of a manual action? For example, a local business site that links out to informational town and county pages seems/is relatively natural. I imagine your outbound linking would have to be pretty obnoxious to raise any red flags, no?

Thanks, Travis, for a great guide that helps my clients absorb this in laymen's terms. I found this as I searched for info to give them as further reading on the SEO issues we discuss. I have a request for an enhancement... One of my clients is a brick and mortar retail store selling pool tables and home game room tables and supplies. As you might suspect, they have hundreds of pictures on their site, all ripe for keyword image tags. They are very important to retailers these days, because image search is one exciting way for their products to be found by shoppers, as well as a plethora of others, including bloggers. It requires some effort, but once they're tagged properly, they act as doorways to their site - completely at their control. This is an often overlooked tactic - one that still offers great reward for those wiling to make the investment - or for the consultant who has a virtual assistant in the Philippines. Cheers!

In reply to <a href="https://smashdigital.com/TWS35/#comment-395">Brendan Tully</a>.

One thing I did notice upon further investigation, is that the non-local movements were not necessarily link related. I saw some *temporary* big swings on sites without any links. So it might be that they are changing several things at once??

Reviewing some of our positions today, looks like Pigeon/the local algo has been fiddled with too. Multiple sites that appeared to have places penalties or way outside the centroid are now ranking again. It looks like CBD areas have been changed back from suburbs to a more general area
